Chapter 35

New York City, NY

Rick

After a few minutes of persistent bell ringing and severe door knocking, Pierpoint cracked the door enough for one eye to see out and his nose to fit in, “Mr. Haade. I’m surprised.”

I pushed the door two eyes wide. “You can imagine my surprise,” I returned with grit, Pierpoint’s eyes staring through the crack. “I come to New York City and find my General Legg living in an actor’s flop on Houston Street. Am I at a loss as to what to think?”

Pierpoint tried to hold the door open one eye’s worth.

I continued, “What should I think when my office assistant notices my very own General on a theatrical placard using Internet Street View? Pardon my intrusion, but I had to come to see for myself.”

Pierpoint resisted as I pushed the overly painted black wood door. “Okay, so what’s it you want? I’ve done nothing wrong. Acting is what I do for a living.”

“On Broadway, you’re welcome to do anything you want. But, for the rest of the world, you’re breaking the law when you impersonate a military officer. It’s a federal offense. Oh my god, the Army? What are they going to do?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about?”

“Guilty people never seem to. I took DNA saliva and handprints off your beer glass at Toby’s house. Can I come in?”

“No.” Pierpoint continued to push against the door, but my shoe was now wedged between the door and frame.

I bent to peek through the crack to see whatever else was going on in there. “I’m not here to arrest you. I’m not a cop.”

He said, “Then I’ll come out there.”

I uncoiled the thrust of my legs against the door as he spoke. The new opening was enough to expose two more gentlemen in his apartment. “Well, two more…I suppose…artists. And who are these interesting lily-flower friends of yours?”

“None of your fucking business, you prick.” He attempted to re-slam the door in my face. It didn’t.

I kicked the door open wider, knocking Pierpoint from his feet down to his rump. “You have to understand; I decide what’s my business and what’s not,” I said. “You and your apartment here are my business.”

Pierpoint glared up from the floor, hand to his face catching blood from his nose. “I don’t have to talk with you.”

“That’s right, but you’re going to. So, it might as well be here in your place.”

The other two men backed into Pierpoint’s open kitchen.

“You’ll talk all right,” I assured. “I have this wonderful way of making people want to talk. I’m sure you don’t want your Teddy Bear buddies here to watch you cry.”

Pierpoint spat blood at me and wiggled his upper front tooth.

“All I want to know is who hired you for the Dallas job.”

Buddy Pierpoint’s guests shuffled around until I said to them, “You two need to keep your feet still while me and Buddy have a chat. Can you do that?” Once they calmed, I returned to Pierpoint. “Who hired you?”

He held a hand out for me to help him get up.
